Adding (Viral) Insult to (Smoke) Injury may Prolong COPD Changes After Smoking Cessation - Lung

Adding (Viral) Insult to (Smoke) Injury may Prolong COPD Changes After Smoking Cessation - Lung

The COVID-19 pandemic has made once again painfully clear that viral infections play an important adverse role in the life of COPD patients [ 1]. Viral infections are a risk...

Conclusions: Viral infections may potentiate cigarette smoke-induced injury and significantly prolong inflammation and airway remodeling, even after smoking cessation. The paper by Li et al. (8) supports that viral infections in COPD patients can cause more than just a temporary setback. Perhaps it is time to focus more on the COPD lung virome...

Community determinants of COPD exacerbations in elderly patients in Lodz province, Poland: a retrospective observational Big Data cohort study

Source : https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/12/10/e060247

Objectives To evaluate the prevalence and identify demographic, economic and environmental local community determinants of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations in elderly in primary care using Big Data approach....

Conclusions: Big Data statistical analysis facilitated the evaluation of the prevalence and determinants of COPD exacerbation in the elderly residents of Lodz province, Poland. Modification of identified local community determinants may potentially decrease the number of exacerbations in elderly patients with COPD.

High-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy for admitted COPD-patients. A retrospective cohort study

High-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy for admitted COPD-patients. A retrospective cohort study

Source : https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0272372

Background The use of High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is increasing in admitted COPD-patients and could provide a step in between non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and standard oxygen supply. Recent studies demonstrated...

Conclusions: This large retrospective study showed that HFNC-treatment in patients with an AECOPD was initiated most often for sputum stasis as primary reason. Factors associated with improved outcomes of HFNC-treatment was the absence of vascular and/or cardiac co-morbidities and no need for in-hospital NIV-treatment.

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of the TCM "Yupingfeng Granules&rdqu | COPD

Source : https://www.dovepress.com/cost-effectiveness-analysis-of-the-tcm-yupingfeng-granules-in-the-trea-peer-reviewed-fulltext-article-COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common, preventable and treatable disease that is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation due to airway and/or alveolar abnormalities usually caused...

Conclusions: By reducing the number of acute exacerbations of COPD, thereby correspondingly reducing the follow-up treatment cost, Yupingfeng granules combined with conventional treatment were found to provide a cost-effective therapeutic strategy for COPD.
